Everybody Loves Opal
by John Patrick
Opal, a middle-aged recluse, is an optimist who always abides faith in the goodness of human nature. Into her world come Gloria, Bradford and Solomon, all three on the lam. They decide that what she needs is plenty of insurance, a rapid demise, and three beneficiaries named Gloria, Bradford and Solomon. The unsavory trio concoct a series of elaborate schemes, but each "accident" backfires. Through it all, Opal radiates kindness, affection and, strangely enough, gratitude. But the real clincher comes at the end. Playwright John Patrick describes his immensely popular play as "a prank in three acts."
